In short, the answer is because it's a great looking, fine quality kit car which offers high performance (due to its lightness) and can be built for as little as £12,000 - much less than most of its competitors.

When redesigning the Python's underpinnings, Vince Wright's philosophy was to combine strength and lightness to create an advanced Cobra that could out-perform its rivals. To this end he designed an all-new chassis to make use of the donor BMW's superbly engineered 5-series (E34) powertrain and running gear. While most other Cobras still use the old, heavyweight and expensive Jaguar XJ6/12 suspension, the Python has progressed on to a higher level thanks to the prestige BMW's suspension, brakes, power steering system and range of six- and eight-cylinder engines.

A strong feature of the Python is its single donor vehicle status. Buy an E34 donor for between £200 and £1000 and that's all you need to get the Python up to the full running stage. You can use any of the engines that come with the BMW - the silky smooth 2.8-litre and 3.5-litre straight sixes are favourites - or you can go the V8 route with Chevy, Ford, Rover or BMW units.

Our craftsman-moulded GRP bodywork is also light and strong, being made via modern techniques that include extensive use of polyurethane foam sandwiched in glassfibre.

Other important Python attributes are wide-opening doors, easy entry, good driver comfort thanks to a cockpit that's 2in longer than most, a large boot, an excellent turning circle and, of course, power steering as standard. There's also an excellent hood which offers decent headroom and good vision. It also happens to look pretty good, too.
